The Sandman Season 2 Volume 1 Review
Netflix’s second season of The Sandman, adapting the beloved graphic novel, delivers a captivatingly surreal and escapist fantasy with the potential for a major hit—were it not overshadowed by the cancellation of its creator, Neil Gaiman, last year.
Gaiman long cultivated an image as a staunch feminist and ally to trans and gay communities, a persona as integral to his brand as The Sandman itself, which follows Morpheus, the brooding lord of dreams (inspired by a young Gaiman and The Cure’s Robert Smith). However, allegations of abusive and coercive behavior from multiple women have recast him from geek icon to a cautionary figure.
Despite Gaiman’s denials, insisting he “never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity,” his career has effectively collapsed. Consequently, Netflix is concluding The Sandman after a shortened two-season run, covering just a fraction of the 10 original graphic novels.
From a damage-control perspective, Netflix’s decision is understandable. Yet, this visually stunning and boldly unique series, rich with potential, arguably deserves a fuller exploration.
Producer David S. Goyer described working on the show amid the allegations as “weird,” noting Gaiman’s reduced involvement compared to the first season. This shift has little impact on the narrative, which continues to follow Morpheus, aka Dream, portrayed with haunting gravitas by Tom Sturridge. As one of the “Endless,” embodying facets of human existence, Morpheus joins characters like Desire (Mason Alexander Park) and fan-favorite Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste, partly inspired by Gaiman’s friend, Tori Amos).
