Kaalidhar Laapata 2025 Movie Review
When doctors offer no solutions for Kaalidhar’s (Abhishek Bachchan) worsening memory loss and hallucinations beyond costly medication, his family plots to abandon him. As the eldest of four siblings, Kaalidhar is taken by his two younger brothers to the Kumbh Mela with a plan to “lose” him in the crowd. To avoid suspicion, they report him missing at the lost and found office but do nothing to ensure his return. Alone and unable to recall his name or address, Kaalidhar searches for his brothers and stumbles back to their tent, only to overhear their relief at his disappearance due to the burden of his medical expenses. Heartbroken, Kaalidhar boards a random bus to escape, finding refuge for the night at a temple near a village.
There, he meets Ballu (Daivik Bhagela), an 8-year-old orphan, and the two form an unexpected bond. Street-smart Ballu takes Kaalidhar under his wing, while Kaalidhar looks out for him, their relationship growing into a father-son-like connection. Together, they create a wishlist of Kaalidhar’s lifelong dreams and begin fulfilling them one by one. Meanwhile, Kaalidhar’s debt-ridden brothers, desperate to resolve their financial troubles, return to the lost and found officer, Subodh (Zeeshan Ayyub), to restart the search for him.
‘Kaalidhar Laapata,’ a Hindi remake of the 2019 Tamil comedy-drama KD, directed by Madhumita, stays largely faithful to the original with some tweaks. Unlike the 80-year-old KD, whose children plot his euthanasia to seize his property, Kaalidhar is a middle-aged man grappling with memory loss. While the film strikes many emotional chords, it falters in parts. The wishlist Kaalidhar and Ballu create lacks the poignant resonance of KD’s bucket list in the original, and Kaalidhar’s memory loss is portrayed inconsistently. Additionally, his past decision to part ways with his love, Meera (Nimrat Kaur in a cameo), feels unconvincing.
