Brick 2025 Movie Review

I’m hooked on single-location films, no matter the genre. Whether it’s a house, train, plane, car, spaceship, bank, or motel, I’m all in. Sidney Lumet’s 12 Angry Men is a gripping drama that only gets better with each viewing. Krampus is a holiday must-watch, and Everybody Says I’m Fine is a hidden gem. The list goes on. But post-COVID, the allure of this subgenre shifted. What was once a clever narrative device started mirroring our locked-down reality. Plus, with safety protocols, single-location shoots became a budget-friendly choice, making the approach feel repetitive or uninspired. Recent films like Evil Dead Rise, Sinners, Carry-On, and Bramayugam prove there’s still creative potential in confined settings. Does Philip Koch’s Brick rise to their level or fall flat? Let’s see.

Brick follows Tim and Liv, a Hamburg couple married for nearly seven years. After Liv’s miscarriage, Tim emotionally withdraws, pouring himself into his game development. Desperate to salvage their crumbling marriage, Liv proposes a romantic Paris road trip, but Tim, oblivious to the stakes, prioritizes work once again. Heartbroken, Liv decides to leave him in the middle of the night, packing her bags to start anew. When she opens their apartment door, she’s stopped by a bizarre, impenetrable wall—magnetic and unlike anything they’ve seen. Initially, they assume it’s related to ongoing building renovations, but as its otherworldly nature becomes clear, they realize they’re trapped in something far beyond human understanding.
